Bihar Deputy CM Blames Congress for Nepal’s Chaos, Cites Old Merger Proposal
Patna: In the middle of Nepal’s growing political mess, Bihar’s Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary has pointed fingers at the Congress party. He says their past decisions are behind the current unrest in the neighboring country.
Talking to reporters in Patna, Choudhary didn’t hold back. "The anarchy we’re seeing in Nepal today comes straight from Congress’s mistakes," he said. "If Nepal was part of India, this kind of turmoil wouldn’t happen. Congress split these neighbors apart. Imagine Nepal as an Indian state—it would be peaceful and thriving. The same goes for Pakistan."
Nepal’s crisis kicked off after Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli quit on Tuesday. It all started with Gen Z-led protests against social media curbs and corruption claims. Things quickly turned ugly, much like the recent violence in Bangladesh. Angry crowds stormed Parliament, the Prime Minister’s Office, and homes of top leaders, including President Ramchandra Paudel and Oli.
Fires broke out in government buildings, schools, and ministers’ houses. Dozens got hurt, cars burned, and the chaos forced a shutdown of Tribhuvan International Airport, halting flights.
Choudhary’s comments shine a light on a forgotten bit of history. In his book The Presidential Years, former President Pranab Mukherjee revealed that Nepal’s King Tribhuvan Bir Bikram Shah once wanted to merge his country with India. Back in the late 1940s, with China’s communist revolution and its takeover of Tibet in 1950 looming large, the king asked Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru for help. But Nehru turned it down, saying Nepal should stay independent and build its democracy.
At the time, Nepal was in big trouble. The powerful Rana rulers, who had controlled things since 1846, finally fell in 1951. This led to a new constitutional monarchy under King Tribhuvan.
Not everyone agrees with Mukherjee’s story, though. Some historians call it a jab at Nehru’s legacy, and debates continue.
Choudhary’s bold take on Congress policies and Nepal’s instability is stirring up talks in Bihar politics. As Nepal faces its worst unrest in years, this old history feels all too relevant.
