Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is working closely with Tamil Nadu officials to bring home the bodies of nine migrant workers from Assam. These workers tragically died after falling from a construction site in Minjur, Thiruvallur district, on Tuesday.
The accident happened while the workers built an extension for the North Chennai Thermal Power Station. In a post on X, Sarma shared the heartbreaking news and noted that four victims came from Karbi Anglong district, while five hailed from Hojai district.
He named the workers as Munna Kemprai, Sorbojit Thausen, Phaibit Fanglu, Bidayum Porbosa, Paban Sorong, Prayanto Sorong, Suman Kharikap, Dimaraj Thousen, and Dipak Raijung. “My deepest condolences to their families and well-wishers,” Sarma wrote.
Tamil Nadu officials described the incident as a major mishap at the Ennore Thermal Power construction site. A steel arch collapsed, killing the nine workers—all from Assam and nearby regions—and injuring one other person. Dr. J. Radhakrishnan, chairman of the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO), told reporters that BHEL officials were on site helping with the response.
Police are investigating the exact cause of the construction site accident in Tamil Nadu. They continue to probe the matter as families grieve the loss of these migrant workers.
