West Bengal police pulled off an incredible sea chase to nab a fugitive accused of sexually abusing a minor girl. The dramatic arrest happened Saturday in the middle of the Bay of Bengal, where officers disguised themselves as fishermen to catch the man hiding on a boat.
This suspect had dodged police for a full year, slipping away across 20 states before the team finally cornered him. He was working with a suspected child and women trafficking gang, according to investigators.
The case started back in October 2024 with a missing person report for a teenage girl at Haringhata police station in Nadia district. Police searched high and low but couldn’t find her at first. Then, in July, they rescued the girl from Kalyani in the same district. A medical check revealed she was pregnant, leading cops to link the case to the POCSO Act for child sexual abuse and upgrade it to kidnapping.
Ranaghat police district superintendent Aashish Kumar Maurya shared the details: “This guy had been on the run for a year and might be tied to trafficking rings. Our team’s hard work paid off—everyone stepped up their game. Grabbing him out at sea feels like a big win.”
To track him down, a deputy superintendent of police oversaw the hunt, with the Special Operations Group and a Special Investigation Team on the case. They followed his mobile phone signals, which showed him jumping locations constantly. For the last month, he’d been lurking around Namkhana and Kakdwip in South 24 Parganas district, eventually holing up on a fishing boat more than 10 kilometers offshore.
In a bold move, two sub-inspectors and two constables from Ranaghat dressed as fishermen, boarded a boat, and sailed out to his hideout. They arrested him right there and hauled him back to shore.
This West Bengal police operation highlights their determination in tackling child trafficking and sexual abuse cases under the POCSO Act, bringing a bit of justice to the Nadia district community.
