Fraudster Caught in Srinagar: Posed as Top Official to Scam Job Seekers for Over Rs 50 Lakh
In a big win for law enforcement in Jammu and Kashmir, the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Crime Branch Kashmir has nabbed a notorious fraudster behind a shocking impersonation and financial fraud case. The arrest happened in Srinagar, and it’s all about stopping scams that target innocent people looking for government jobs.
The accused is Abdul Majid Mir, son of Abdul Rahim Mir from Lishtiyal in Kupwara. Police arrested him linked to FIR No. 10/2025 under key sections of the law. It all started when victims filed a complaint, saying Mir pretended to be the Duty Officer to the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir. He sweet-talked them with promises of plum government jobs and land plots at SDA Colony in Bemina, Srinagar. But it was all a con—he pocketed over Rs 50 lakhs from them.
Digging deeper, investigators uncovered Mir’s tricks. He handed out fake appointment letters claiming they came from the Airport Authority of India and forged documents for land from the Srinagar Development Authority (SDA). These shady moves scream serious crime, and police slapped charges under IPC Sections 419 (cheating by impersonation), 420 (cheating), 467 (forgery of valuable documents), 468 (forgery for cheating), and 471 (using forged documents).
After the arrest, Mir faced the Judicial Magistrate 1st Class in Srinagar. The court gave police a 5-day remand to grill him further and gather more evidence. The EOW team is on a mission to crack down on financial fraud and economic offences in Kashmir, and they’re asking everyone to stay alert against such job scams and impersonation frauds.
In other Jammu and Kashmir police news, three terror sympathisers got arrested in Poonch district. Cops recovered three AK-47 rifles plus a huge stash of warlike stores. Inspector General of Police (IGP), Jammu Zone, shared on X that it took "dogged determination and relentless investigation" to make these arrests. This comes after earlier recoveries of four more AKs in the same area, showing police’s tough stance against terrorism in the region.
