In Lucknow, the police announced that five suspects in the Raebareli Dalit lynching have been caught, and other suspects are being hunted down. The men who killed 38‑year‑old Hari Om are now in police custody, and their houses are under search.
Raebareli’s Additional Superintendent of Police, Sanjeev Kumar Sinha, told reporters Monday that the investigation is running full speed. “We are looking for more people who helped or encouraged the attack,” he said. “We’ve already taken the main suspects into custody. We are also searching other houses linked to the crime.”
Police said they are also reviewing viral footage of the attack. The footage shows men surrounding Hari Om and beating him before he was found half‑naked at the Ishwar Daspur railway halt in the Unchahar Kotwali area on October 2. “His body had serious injuries,” Sinha added.
The raid on the crime also led to internal police action. One sub‑Inspector was suspended for dereliction of duty, and two beat constables were dismissed. Five police officers, including a local inspector, have been suspended for alleged neglect.
The incident has sparked a major political row. Congress officials claim that the series of events shows a breakdown of law and order under the ruling BJP government. They say the police’s slow response contributed to the tragedy.
Sinha warned the public not to spread rumors. “The victim was from the Dalit community, but the attackers include people from forward and backward castes,” he said. “Caste should not be a reason for the attack; everyone is a criminal if they commit such a crime.”
The case remains under intense scrutiny. Authorities are focusing on gathering evidence, holding more suspects, and ensuring that justice is delivered swiftly. The investigation’s progress and outcomes will shape the political debate over the country’s communal tensions and law enforcement effectiveness.
