Cyclone Ditwah impact: Andhra Pradesh Home Minister reviews situation

Amaravati – On Sunday, Andhra Pradesh Home Minister V. Anitha inspected the impact of Cyclone Ditwah on four districts after the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert. She held a video conference from the RTGS centre at the state secretariat with the district collectors of Nellore, Tirupati, Kadapa, Chittoor, and Annamayya.

The minister urged officials to stay vigilant over the next 48 hours and to regularly notify local communities about the evolving situation. “It is our collective duty to prevent any loss of life,” she stressed, emphasizing the importance of promptly responding to help requests at the control room.

Anitha asked the collectors to clear fallen tree branches and broken hoardings that could disrupt daily life, and to assign officers who could avert further incidents. She also insisted that any power outages be restored immediately. The collectors confirmed they had taken all necessary measures, including plans to relocate residents to relief camps if needed.

Participants in the video call included RTGS Secretary Katamaneni Bhaskar, State Disaster Management Authority MD Prakhar Jain, and other senior officials.

The IMD has declared a red alert for Nellore, Chittoor, and Tirupati districts, anticipating heavy to very heavy rainfall under Cyclone Ditwah’s influence over the southwestern Bay of Bengal, northern Sri Lanka, and the Tamil Nadu coast. Prakasam, Annamayya, and YSR Kadapa may experience heavy precipitation in one or two locations, while Anantapur, Sri Satya Sai, Kurnool, Nandyal, Palnadu, Bapatla, and Guntur could see heavy rains in a few spots. Light to moderate showers or thundershowers are expected across most of South Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema, with similar weather, though less intense, predicted in northern coastal regions and Yanam.

Wind forecasts indicate gale speeds (60–70 km/h, gusts up to 80 km/h) in isolated southern coastal areas and Rayalaseema, while squalls (40–50 km/h, gusts up to 60 km/h) are likely north of the coast and in Yanam. Thunderstorms with lightning are also anticipated along the coast, Yanam, and Rayalaseema.

The Disaster Management Authority has called on residents of Prakasam, Nellore, and Tirupati districts to remain alert and prepared.
