New Delhi, Dec 9 – Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited the Bhalaswa area to check on the 7,400 flats that were built back in 2016 for people from the economically weaker sections (EWS) but had stayed empty for years. She expressed deep frustration that the previous administration had never allotted a single unit to the poor families who had been waiting, calling the long abandonment a “grave injustice” to the city’s disadvantaged residents.
During the visit, the Chief Minister urged the relevant departments to accelerate the completion and hand‑over of the units, so they can be quickly ready for the families who currently live in makeshift shacks. She also announced plans to transform the site into a model residential complex, complete with modern amenities.
Accompanying her were Cabinet Minister Ashish Sood, MLA Deepak Chaudhary, and other senior officials. Ashish Sood noted that the units had decayed because of earlier governments’ neglect, and that thousands of families were being denied the homes they deserved. He emphasized the need for urgent action.
The Delhi Government has outlined a new, fully equipped rehabilitation model for jhuggi clusters. Under this plan, the Bhalaswa flats will be thoroughly repaired and upgraded into a contemporary housing complex that includes e‑rickshaw charging stations, secure commercial spaces, parking, health facilities, parks, and anganwadi centres.
Rekha Gupta said, “We are turning a long‑standing dream for hundreds of thousands of poor families into reality during our tenure.”
