Jibin Gopinath started dreaming of acting when he was eight, and today he’s reaping the rewards. The 42‑year‑old former constable of the Kerala Police is enjoying the success of his breakthrough Malayalam horror thriller Dies Irae, a film that has earned rave reviews and put him on the radar of the industry’s rising stars.
Working alongside Pranav Mohanlal—son of Bollywood icon Mohanlal—Gopinath calls the movie a turning point. “Perseverance has paid off,” he told , smiles included. “The response to Dies Irae has been overwhelming. I’m getting messages and calls from all over the state. It feels surreal.”
His journey began in 2001 with a small role in Thandavam, Mohanlal’s blockbuster. For more than a decade, Jibin appeared in roughly 50 films in minor or uncredited parts, hoping for a breakthrough. “I had my first audition at eight, but it took until 2016 for me to land a notable role in Y,” he recalls. “That’s when I knew I belonged in cinema.”
While building his film career, Jibin joined the Kerala Police in 2007 as a constable. His talent didn’t go unnoticed; senior officers encouraged him to star in public‑service videos, which helped him hone his acting skills. His visibility grew again in 2023 when he appeared with Dulquer Salmaan in a popular PhonePe commercial. The exposure opened doors to stronger roles.
That same year, he made a bold move, taking a five‑year leave from the police to focus on acting full time. “Leaving the uniform, even temporarily, wasn’t easy,” he admits. “But I knew the leap of faith was the right choice.”
Gopinath will soon play a key role in Thudakkam, the debut film of Vismaya Mohanlal. He’s also frequently cast as a policeman, a role he embraces. “I get many offers to play a cop, and I’m perfectly comfortable in khaki—it’s part of who I am,” he laughs.
A local celebrity in Pothencode, Thiruvananthapuram, Jibin balances a busy shooting schedule with family life. He has twin children and a journalist wife, Honey, who keeps things running smoothly when he’s on set.
From humble beginnings to a rising star in Malayalam cinema, Jibin Gopinath is stepping confidently into the spotlight—one performance at a time.
