Delhi-NCR experiences heavy monsoon rains, bringing relief and chaos
The monsoon storm has made a strong comeback in Delhi-NCR, soaking the region with heavy showers. On Wednesday, dark clouds gathered in the afternoon, unleashing a powerful rain that cooled the air and cleaned the city. But the rain also caused traffic jams and waterlogging in many areas, disrupting daily routines.
While the showers provided relief from the humid heat, they also made commutes difficult. Many people faced long delays. A Ghaziabad resident shared, “It usually takes me 40 minutes to reach my office in Noida, but today I was stuck for nearly two hours.” Another commuter from South Delhi, heading to Noida, said, “The sky was clear when I left home, but suddenly it started pouring. I got soaked by the time I reached Noida.”
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted more rain for Delhi-NCR over the next week. Wednesday’s heavy rainfall was just the start. The forecast says rain with thunder could continue on September 4 and 5, followed by more showers on September 6 and 7. By September 8, cloudy weather is expected to linger. Temperatures are likely to stay between 23-24°C in the mornings and 32-34°C during the day.
Good news from the rain is the significant improvement in air quality. Thanks to the rain washing away dust and pollutants, many cities recorded AQI (Air Quality Index) levels in the “good” to “very good” range. For example, Ayyanagar had an AQI of 37, Bawana 39, Mundka 35, and Narela 44 — all indicating clean air.
However, some areas still showed pollution. Jahangirpuri had an AQI of 108, and North Campus was at 197, both in the “moderate” to “poor” categories. Noida, on the other hand, enjoyed very clean air, with AQI levels around 47-48 in several sectors.
Temperature levels also dropped due to the rains, with daytime highs around 33-34°C and nighttime lows falling to 23-24°C. Overall, the monsoon showers have brought a much-needed cool down and cleaner air, even as they continue to impact daily life in Delhi-NCR.
