Delhi police made a big hit on an illegal liquor smuggling ring on Saturday night. A 27‑year‑old man named Vikas – known to police as “Vicky” – was caught driving a Honda Jazz with a fake licence plate while hauling 32 cartons of illicit booze. The barrels were worth about 1,600 quarters of liquor and were clearly marked “For Sale in Haryana Only,” confirming they were meant to travel into Delhi from Haryana.
The operation happened on Nov. 12 near DDA Park in the Jwala Puri area of Paschim Vihar West. Officers Dharmender and Anuj were on a routine night patrol when they spotted the speeding car. When the driver tried to make a quick U‑turn to escape, the police pulled him over. He resisted, but the patrolling crew managed to stop the vehicle and take the suspect into custody.
Vikas has a prior record with the Excise Act, having been charged in three earlier cases involving illegal liquor. Delhi police also found that the car’s number plate was forged, a tactic often used to hide the vehicle’s identity and evade detection. The Honda Jazz, the seized booze, and other evidence have been taken as case property.
A formal charge sheet is now filed under Sections 33, 38, and 58 of the Delhi Excise Act at the Paschim Vihar West police station. Deputy Commissioner of Police Sachin Sharma said the arrest is part of a broader crackdown on night‑time smuggling. Investigation is still underway to trace the source and origin of the smuggled liquor.
This raid highlights Delhi police’s growing effort to curb illegal alcohol trade from Haryana and protect the city’s residents from unsafe, illicit booze.
