Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced on Monday that the city will host a spectacular Chhath Puja this year. She promised detailed preparations, including setups along both banks of the Yamuna River, with a big emphasis on keeping the ghats spotlessly clean.
“We want this Chhath Puja to be historic,” Gupta said. “Our team will roll out a full plan to make it unforgettable. Delhi residents can look forward to grand celebrations right by the river.”
The news comes as Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the festival’s growing global appeal during his monthly radio show, Mann ki Baat. Modi shared that the Indian government is pushing hard to get Chhath Mahaparva added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
“I’m thrilled to tell you about this big effort for Chhath Puja,” Modi said. “Once it’s on the UNESCO list, people everywhere will get to see its true grandeur and spiritual vibe.”
Modi described Chhath Puja as a vital part of India’s rich culture. The festival follows Diwali and honors the Sun God through special rituals, including prayers to the setting sun. “It’s not just a local event anymore—Chhath Puja draws crowds from across India and around the world, turning it into a true global celebration,” he added.
For many, Chhath Puja means family gatherings, traditional offerings, and a deep connection to nature, especially along riverbanks like the Yamuna. With these announcements, excitement is building for what could be one of Delhi’s most vibrant festivals yet.
