‘Deliberate delays likely in counting tomorrow’: INDIA Bloc

On the night before Bihar’s assembly vote count, Tejashwi Yadav, the leading candidate for the INDIA Bloc, warned that the process could be deliberately slowed on seats where his alliance is ahead. The chief ministerial hopeful met with media and union leaders at a late‑night press conference in Patna to make his point.

“We’re worried some officials may slow down counting in our strong seats and rush ahead in those where the NDA is leading,” he said. He accused unnamed actors and parts of the press of pushing a narrative that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) was winning and that the Prime Minister would rush to the BJP office later that day.

Yadav said he had heard from officers about instructions that could influence the count. “Some leaders and senior officers in Patna and Delhi may be pushing for manipulation,” he warned. He urged all Election Commission of India (ECI) staff and government officers to stick to their oath and conduct the count honestly and quickly.

The former chief minister added that the INDIA Bloc believes it is leading and that the NDA will be defeated. He said agents from his camp would monitor the counting centers to guard against any malpractice. If the 2020 counting drama—when the count was delayed, and Yadav only got his certificate at 2 a.m. the next day—repeats, he warned the public would respond strongly.

Other leaders echoed the call for a clean process. CPI‑ML National General Secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya compared the election to a hurdle race, urging the ECI to finish counting swiftly and transparently. “The third hurdle is counting,” he said. “Let the people’s mandate be clear.”

Mukesh Sahani, chief of the Vikassheel Insaan Party, reminded officers of their constitutional oath: “You promised fair elections and justice. Bihar voters seek change, jobs, and the INDIA Bloc’s promise.”

Congress state in‑charge Krishna Allavaru added that BJP is losing in many strongholds, from Patna to East and West Champaran, Supaul, and Darbhanga. He urged officers to respect the clear mandate for change.

Eye‑watering, the debate centers around how fast and transparent the vote count will be, with all key parties demanding an honest, swift tally that reflects the choice of Bihar’s voters.
