In Bhopal today, former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Digvijaya Singh riled up the political scene by calling former JNU PhD student Umar Khalid “completely innocent” and a victim of “grave injustice.”
Singh’s Facebook post, which went viral, pleaded for Khalid’s immediate release. He called him a brilliant academic—not a traitor. The post came after Singh shared a news article about a research project Khalid worked on and added the slogan “Jai Siya Ram.” The comments hit on court fairness, minority rights, and alleged political backlash.
The post also mentioned recent arrests of people who wrote “I Love Mohammad” on a temple wall in Aligarh, noting that they were all Hindus. Singh’s message said that Khalid is wrongly accused by a “BJP and RSS conspiracy” that unfairly targets Muslims.
Khalid has been jailed more than five years under India’s stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) while he fights for bail in the Supreme Court. He is a key suspect in the 2020 Delhi riots that left 53 people dead. Court hearings have repeatedly denied his bail, sparking protests that long detention hurts the principle that “bail is the rule.”
The ruling BJP slammed Singh, calling his defence “anti‑national” and saying Congress backs “riot masterminds.” Singh, who has long criticized the RSS, has compared the group’s treatment of Muslims to Hitler’s persecution of Jews and called India an “open‑air prison” for minorities.
Supporters see Singh’s post as a brave stand against institutional bias, arguing that Muslim accused often face denied bail while others walk free. Opponents suspect it is vote‑bank politics, pointing to Singh’s earlier support for activists in Bhima Koregaon and anti‑CAA cases.
With Supreme Court hearings back on the schedule, Singh’s words could shape the national debate over freedom, security, and minority rights.
