Bhubaneswar police scored a big win in their fight against illegal guns on Saturday, arresting a notorious criminal and seizing 10 semi-automatic pistols from him. The suspect, a key player in the illegal firearms trade across Odisha districts, got caught red-handed while trying to sell the weapons.
Commissioner of Police S. Dev Datta Singh shared the details with reporters. He explained that this bust builds on a recent crackdown where officers grabbed eight semi-automatic weapons about 10 days earlier. “We’re keeping the pressure on illegal firearms dealers,” Singh said. “Today, we nabbed this gun runner and took 10 more sophisticated pistols off the streets. These guns were headed for Bhubaneswar and nearby areas, fueling local crime.”
The arrested man is Shaikh Nadim, 31, from Itatikiri village in Jagatsinghpur district. Along with the pistols, police recovered 18 live rounds of ammunition, 10 magazines, a mobile phone, and his motorcycle. Sources say Nadim has a long rap sheet, with multiple criminal cases in various Odisha districts. Back in April 2019, Kendrapara police arrested him after a dramatic encounter.
Acting on a tip, the Commissionerate’s Special Crime Unit had Nadim under watch for a month. On September 27, a team led by Deputy CP Anup Kanungo stopped him near Dhauli Junction around 5 a.m. He was riding in from Puri toward Bhubaneswar, ready to deal the weapons to local buyers.
This isn’t the only recent success for Bhubaneswar police. They’ve also arrested three other gun runners, including one from Jharkhand, and seized eight more semi-automatic pistols, 34 live rounds, and 10 magazines. Singh believes these operations will help curb violent crimes by choking off the supply of illegal guns in the state.
