DRI busts Pangolin scale smuggling racket in Telangana; 6.53 kg seized

In a swift raid in Hanamkonda, Telangana, police seized more than six kilograms of pangolin scales, a key item in the world’s illegal wildlife trade. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) – Hyderabad Zonal Unit – pulled off the operation on October 4 after receiving targeted intelligence about a suspected pangolin trafficking ring.

DRI officers tracked four suspects who were caught while moving the stolen scales. The seized weight corresponds to the theft of about five Indian pangolins. That figure highlights the ongoing threat to this protected species, which is listed as Schedule I under India’s Wildlife (Protection) Act of 1972 and is also banned by the international CITES treaty.

The DRI handed over the scales and the arrested men to the local Forest Range Officer for further investigation. This action shows that law‑enforcement agencies in India are stepping up their fight against wildlife trafficking, aiming to protect vulnerable species from poachers and illegal traders.
