Durgapur gang-rape case: Police find discrepancies in statements of accused
Kolkata, Oct. 21 – After six days of questioning, police in West Bengal still find gaps in the stories told by a medical student’s boyfriend and five villagers arrested in a Durgapur gang‑rape case.
Investigators say they are tying up loose ends in the case, which began when a second‑year medical student from Odisha was allegedly assaulted in a forested area outside a private medical college and hospital in Durgapur on Oct. 10.
The student – who was in a relationship with her classmate and boyfriend – was reportedly at the campus that night to buy dinner. Police later discovered the couple in a secluded spot outside the campus, where three of the five accused demanded money. The boyfriend was allowed to leave to gather cash, and while he was gone, one of the men raped the student. Two other men watched the assault.
Further evidence emerged when the accused snatched the student’s mobile phone and were allegedly released after she handed over money with her boyfriend’s help. Police allege that the boyfriend’s statements misled investigators from the start, creating confusion.
All five suspects will appear in court on Wednesday, as their court‑ordered police custody ends. Police will seek an extension to continue interrogation and investigate the missing pieces.
The victim has been discharged from the hospital and now lives at a rented house in Durgapur under close police protection, accompanied by her mother. Officers are posted outside the home to ensure her safety.
The case has drawn calls for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe, with the victim’s father urging swift action to hold the perpetrators accountable.
