ECI estimates over 10 lakh names to be deleted from Bengal voters’ list after SIR

Kolkata, Nov. 24 – The Election Commission of India (ECI) estimates that once its Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in West Bengal wraps up, more than one million names will be struck off the voter roll.

The figure comes after a review of enumeration forms that two‑tier officers (BOs and BLOs) already collected and logged into the BLO App, the insider said, speaking from the Chief Electoral Officer’s office.

Those names slated for deletion include deceased voters, duplicate entries (records that appear twice), people who’ve permanently moved to another state, and those who are missing or cannot be found.

“The maximum deletions will be in the category of dead voters, which will be around 6.5 lakh,” the insider added. “The process of collecting the duly filled enumeration forms and uploading them in the BLO App is ongoing, and the exact number of names to be deleted from the voters’ list will be known only after the process is completed and the draft voters’ list is published by the commission.”

Earlier this month, West Bengal’s chief electoral officer, Manoj Kumar Agarwal, urged voters to submit their completed enumeration forms to BLOs as soon as possible. He reminded everyone that the deadline is December 4 and that it will not be extended; those who fail to turn in the required forms will automatically be dropped from the electorate.

A draft version of the updated roll is due to be released on December 9.

When asked about the recent deaths of three BLOs — a situation reportedly linked to the intense workload of the SIR — Agarwal said the ECI had received detailed reports from the district magistrates, who also act as district electoral officers in the affected areas.

“The contribution of the BLOs in the SIR exercise in West Bengal is really commendable. In the true sense, the BLOs are the real heroes in the revision exercise,” he said.
