Kolkata, Oct 27 – The Election Commission of India (ECI) will reveal the dates for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists in the coming days. The press conference, set for 4:30 p.m. at the ECI headquarters in New Delhi, is expected to announce which states will hold the SIR in the immediate phase, focusing on states where assembly elections are slated for next year.
The SIR is a nationwide review, but the first round will target states with upcoming elections. Based on the schedule, four states are likely to be named: West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Assam. The Union Territory of Puducherry, which also has next‑year legislative assembly polls, may be added to the announcement. Bihar already completed its SIR, as the state is holding a two‑phase assembly election next month.
West Bengal’s SIR has sparked heated debate. The ruling Trinamool Congress calls the exercise a covert move by the central government and the BJP, arguing it could lead to the removal of voters on dubious grounds. The BJP counters that the opposition fears the deletion of names of illegal Bangladeshis and Rohingyas from the voter rolls. The CPI(M)-led Left Front does not oppose the SIR outright but warns it should not inadvertently delete legitimate voters. Critics have also raised concerns about the appointment of booth‑level officers and electoral registration officials.
The last SIR in West Bengal took place in 2002. As the ECI announces the specific dates and states, voters and political parties will closely monitor the review process to ensure fairness and transparency before the next election cycle.
