In New Delhi, officials from the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DDWS) under the Ministry of Jal Shakti kicked off a big community cleanup drive this morning. Led by Union Minister C R Patil and Minister of State V Somanna, the one-hour Shramdaan event ran from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. at Kalindi Kunj on the Yamuna Ghat. It was part of the nationwide Ek Din, Ek Ghanta, Ek Saath campaign, tied to Swachhata Hi Seva 2025.
A crowd of DDWS officials, headed by Secretary Ashok K K Meena, joined forces with youth volunteers, Rural Wash Partners, NGOs, civil society groups, and students. Before diving in, everyone took the Swachhata Pledge, promising to keep their areas clean and encourage others to join the effort.
The cleanup lined up with the birth anniversary of Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay, whose Antyodaya philosophy pushes for citizen-driven progress. Similar Shramdaan drives happened across India, with ministries, state governments, panchayats, and local bodies all pitching in to boost the Swachhata movement.
Union Minister C R Patil spoke to the group, highlighting Mahatma Gandhi’s push for cleanliness alongside independence. He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership for taking the Swachh Bharat drive to new levels. Patil stressed the Yamuna River’s role as Delhi’s lifeline and called on people to prevent pollution from the start. “Our cleanup work would be easier if we all avoided polluting in the first place,” he said, urging everyone to get involved.
In his welcome address, Secretary Ashok K K Meena explained that this Shramdaan fits into the Swachhata Hi Seva 2025 campaign, which runs from September 17 until Swachh Bharat Diwas on October 2—Gandhi’s birthday. He emphasized Jan Bhagidari, or public participation, as a core part of the cleanliness drive, saying today’s event brings communities together to recommit to a cleaner India.
The team collected about 2,500 kilos of waste, sprucing up the Yamuna Ghat and showing the power of people coming together for jan bhagidari.
