Electrocution deaths: CM Mamata considering religious factor in deciding compensation, alleges BJP

In Kolkata, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced Rs 2 lakh in compensation for the families of people killed in electrocution incidents during Durga Puja preparations. This came after a tragic Tuesday that claimed 10 lives across the state, including eight in the city, which critics blame on government negligence.

BJP leader and IT cell chief Amit Malviya quickly fired back on social media, slamming the amount as too low. He pointed to a stark contrast from 2015, when Banerjee offered Rs 10 lakh each to families of West Bengal victims in the Mecca stampede. “This shows how little she values lives in Bengal,” Malviya wrote, hinting that religious factors might influence her decisions on compensation.

Malviya didn’t stop there. He called out Banerjee for her upbeat mood just a day after the deadly accidents. On Wednesday, she joined Garba dancers at a community Durga Puja pandal inauguration in South Kolkata’s Chakraberia area. Sharing a video of the event, Malviya labeled it insensitive. “Less than 24 hours after 11 people died—many from electrocution amid flooding—and she’s dancing dandiya? Mamata Banerjee embodies callousness,” he posted.

The controversy highlights tensions in West Bengal politics, especially around Durga Puja safety and government accountability, as the festival gears up.
