In Guwahati on Friday, senior Congress figure Pawan Khera launched a vigorous critique of Assam’s current chief minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma. He accused Sarma’s government of eroding the state’s political, cultural, and social bedrock, allowing corruption and criminality to flourish.
Speaking to the press, Khera warned that the once‑proud image of Assam—renowned for its vibrant culture, tea plantations, and communal harmony—has become synonymous with drug smuggling, cattle trafficking, and pervasive graft. He said the values and identity linked to the state are being steadily diluted under the present BJP‑led administration.
During a sharp assessment of governance standards, Khera remarked that even the term “ABCD” has lost its original meaning, implying a breakdown in the moral and cultural fabric of society. He criticized the chief minister for prioritising power consolidation over addressing the everyday concerns of ordinary citizens, such as tea‑garden workers whose long‑standing demands remain unaddressed.
Khera also voiced alarm about the 2026 assembly elections, claiming that outsiders were being brought in to sway the electoral process. He argued that massive movements of people via buses and trains could be used to engineer favourable results, presenting a direct threat to the rights and identity of indigenous Assamese communities.
Projecting Congress Assam’s chief, Gaurav Gogoi, as the embodiment of change, Khera declared the party was ready to present an alternative leadership focused on development and strong governance. He recalled the tenure of former chief minister Tarun Gogoi as a time of stability and progress.
The leader went on to assert that state institutions—including the police and the Election Commission—are being employed to shield the chief minister. He said Sarma relies heavily on institutional backing to sustain his political position.
Khera also accused the administration of facilitating the transfer of tribal land to corporate interests and demanded full disclosure of the chief minister’s and his family’s financial holdings over recent years. Questioning Sarma’s political trajectory, he noted that earlier case files against him seemed to vanish once he joined the BJP, calling this a textbook example of “washing‑machine politics” in the country.
