The Chief Justice of India, B.R. Gavai, marked a landmark moment for legal education in Maharashtra when he opened the new Maharashtra National Law University in Goregaon, a suburb of Mumbai, on Wednesday. He praised the state government for its strong support and called the project a “historic milestone” that will set a national, even international, standard for law schools.
Gavai highlighted Maharashtra’s already impressive judicial infrastructure. He felt the state’s new law campus would build on that foundation and become a hub for students and scholars worldwide. In particular, he noted that the government has donated valuable land for the campus, showing its commitment to quality legal education.
Speaking to the bright-eyed students, the Chief Justice said law is more than a profession. “Lawyers are social engineers,” he said. “They help bring social and economic justice to people.” He encouraged students to use their training to shape society for the better.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis echoed Gavai’s enthusiasm. He said Maharashtra is unique in India for having three National Law Universities. He added that all permits for the new campus have been secured and that it will become an “Edu‑City” in Navi Mumbai. Fadnavis promised that “world’s top universities” will join the campus, turning it into an international law education centre.
The Chief Minister also stressed how close education is to industry, business, and politics. “Today, human capital is the most valuable asset,” he said. “Previously, labour moved to the capital; now capital moves to people. That’s why we are building the best human resources in Maharashtra.”
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said the government will keep expanding the judiciary. “We are committed to providing the resources the courts need,” he assured.
Chandrashekhar, the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, added that a law university is a place for shaping good citizens, not just giving knowledge. He remarked that true excellence comes from being a good human being first.
The launch underscores Maharashtra’s ambition to become a global legal education destination, thanks to strong government backing, world‑class infrastructure, and a clear vision for developing skilled lawyers who can shape society.
