Factionalism and organisational divisions hindering Naga unity: Nagaland Dy CM Zeliang

Kohima, Dec 7 – Nagaland’s Deputy Chief Minister T.R. Zeliang used the Advent Christmas gathering on the seventh day of the Hornbill Festival to warn that the state is facing deepening divisions. He said the growing number of factions inside Naga groups, along with splits in various organisations, is creating layers of fragmentation that threaten unity and progress.

Speaking under the banner of the Nagaland Legislators’ Christian Fellowship and the Nagaland Joint Christian Forum (NJCF), Zeliang highlighted that both visible and hidden groups are contributing to a climate of division. He cautioned that unless there is a fresh commitment to harmony, these fractures could lead to lasting damage and instability.

The veteran leader praised the NJCF for its efforts to bring together different denominations and for fostering Christian unity across the state. He urged the forum to carry that spirit of togetherness beyond the church walls, inspiring cohesion in all parts of society.

Zeliang’s message centred on unity, hope, and collective responsibility. He reflected on the deeper meaning of Christmas, stressing that the holiday reminds us that we are strongest when we are united. Drawing from the nativity story, he noted how people of varied backgrounds came together because of a single spark of hope, and he encouraged Nagas to follow that same example.

During his remarks about the Advent theme “Born of God…,” he underscored that the message of Christ’s birth is timeless, offering hope and clarity even in uncertain times. He also highlighted the overwhelming turnout at the recent Healing and Revival Festival in Dimapur, where thousands sought spiritual renewal, calling it a testament to the people’s yearning for God’s mercy and blessings.

As Christmas lights began to glow in homes, Zeliang urged citizens to view them as symbols of shared responsibility to bridge divides. He appealed for forgiveness, understanding and sincere acceptance of one another, reminding everyone that Nagaland’s diversity can be a source of richness rather than separation.

In addition to his appeal for love and peace, Zeliang, a former Chief Minister, expressed hope that the coming year will bring harmony, progress and prosperity through unity and cooperation.

NJCF Secretary Rev. Moses Murry expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister for his support of the devotional service. He encouraged the congregation to look beyond material aspects of Christmas, reminding them of its true purpose and the need for a spiritual revival that can foster peace, unity and deeper joy among the people.

He emphasized that Christmas is the greatest gift humanity has received, urging individuals to examine their hearts and renew their commitment to Jesus. Those attending the function were warmly invited to embrace the spirit of Christmas and the hope it brings to all.
