Farmers in Haryana forced to sell crops below MSP: Congress leader Bhupinder Hooda

Chandigarh, Oct 22 – Former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda fired a sharp criticism at the state’s ruling BJP government over alleged crop fraud and the failure to meet minimum support price (MSP) guarantees for farmers.

“The government has been short‑changing farmers by not buying their produce at statutory prices,” Hooda said. “We see farmers in Narnaul, Hisar, Bhiwani and Nuh selling millet and cotton at prices well below what the MSP says they should get.”

Hooda highlighted concrete examples. He said that in Narnaul market millet is being sold for Rs 1,800‑1,850 per quintal, while the state has purchased none. “Even in Nuh district no millet has been bought, and farmers get no more than Rs 1,700‑1,800 per quintal,” he added. In Hisar too, he said, farmers face losses even though the MSP for millet is Rs 2,775 per quintal.

The former chief minister also pointed out that 40,000 tonnes of moong arrived in Hisar markets last week, yet no government agency bought any of it. Cotton, another key crop, was sold in Bhiwani for Rs 6,500‑7,200 per quintal versus an MSP of Rs 8,100 per quintal. With the state not purchasing, Hooda said only private millers were getting the cotton, leaving farmers with big losses.

“Why do the procurement agencies claim the crops don’t meet standards when the labels on the seeds were fine at planting? Who is holding the sellers of faulty seeds accountable?” Hooda asked. “These excuses allow the government to avoid buying the grain while farmers are left to sell at ‘throwaway’ prices.”

He also called attention to the state’s “Bhavantar Yojana” scheme, saying there is no trace of it in the market. According to Hooda, farmers are now waiting in long queues for fertilizers while the government appears to have ignored everything else.

The accusations come as Haryana’s farmers face a tight season and worry that the promised support will not materialize. Hooda’s statements highlight a growing friction between political leaders and the state’s agricultural community.
