Farmers in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, took drastic action on Tuesday by locking up government officials over a fertilizer shortage. The protest centered around the Karahiya Mandi fertilizer distribution center, where farmers demanded answers about the unavailability of fertilizers and alleged irregularities in their distribution.
The situation escalated when a group of angry farmers confined officials from the state’s co-operative marketing federation and revenue department inside a room for several hours. Among those trapped were the Tehsildar and Nayab Tehsildar, who manage local administrative tasks.
When police learned about the incident, they arrived at the scene. To free the officials, police used mild force, but thankfully, no one was injured during the operation. The administration clarified that there was no use of baton charges against farmers, even as social media circulated videos claiming otherwise, sparking political debates.
Fertilizer distribution was temporarily halted but resumed early Wednesday morning. Senior officials, including revenue and police officers, supervised the smooth delivery of fertilizers to farmers. Heavy police deployment helped ensure the process stayed peaceful and organized.
Many questions are being raised about the incident. Farmers waited for hours to receive fertilizers, despite the authorities claiming there was enough stock. This situation highlights ongoing tensions in Madhya Pradesh, where protests over fertilizer shortages often turn violent.
Similar conflicts recently occurred in Bhind district, where local politicians and officials clashed over fertilizer supplies. Such protests show how critical and sensitive this issue remains for farmers, who rely heavily on timely fertilizer availability for their crops.
