Foreign tourists are buzzing with excitement in Leh, Ladakh, as shops reopen following the curfew relaxation. On Wednesday, visitors from around the world hit the markets, relieved to finally explore and stock up after days of restrictions.
Phien, a traveler from the Netherlands, couldn’t stop raving about the spot. “All the shops that have opened now are selling beautiful things,” she told . “I would definitely recommend Leh as a place to come and visit because the people are very friendly, and the food is very good. The monasteries, the nature, everything is very beautiful.”
Another foreign tourist shared similar joy, noting how quickly things are bouncing back to normal in Ladakh. “We had no idea about anything that was happening. We arrived yesterday. Everything was closed. It was hard to get some food and even water,” he said. “Now I am happy that everything is back to normal, and now we can fill our bellies with good stuff.”
Locals in Leh wasted no time either, crowding the markets to grab groceries, clothes, and other essentials after the curfew eased. The unrest in Ladakh stems from ongoing protests pushing for statehood and inclusion in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, which aims to protect tribal areas.
On the political front, India’s Union Home Ministry stepped up efforts to ease tensions. It announced openness to talks with the Apex Body Leh (ABL) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) anytime, whether through the High Powered Committee on Ladakh or another suitable forum. “The Government has always been open for dialogues on Ladakh matters with the Apex Body Leh (ABL) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) at any time,” the ministry stated in a release. “We would continue to welcome the discussion with ABL and KDA through the HPC on Ladakh or any such platform.”
Still, Leh Apex Body Chairman Thupstan Chhewang made it clear they won’t join discussions with the central government until full peace returns to Ladakh.
