In Hyderabad, the Telangana state cabinet decided on Monday to hold only Gram Panchayat elections in December. The move comes because a ₹3,000‑crore grant earmarked for local bodies will expire on March 31, 2026 if elections are not conducted before that date.
Key points from the cabinet meeting
-
Timing of elections – The government will schedule the Gram Panchayat polls after a public celebration that marks two years of the current Congress administration. The celebrations run from December 1 to 9, and the elections are slated for any date after that.
-
Reservation policy – The High Court has ordered that local‑body elections must keep overall reservation to 50 %. The state has pledged to give 42 % of seats to Backward Classes (BCs). In the Gram Panchayat polls the ruling party will provide 42 % of the tickets to BC candidates.
-
Pending decisions on other bodies – Elections for Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituencies (MPTCs), Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituencies (ZPTCs), and municipal corporations will be decided only after the court finalises its ruling on the 42 % reservation for BCs.
-
BC Commission report – The cabinet will ask a dedicated BC commission to submit a report on reservations for the Gram Panchayat posts of sarpanch and ward members.
Other cabinet actions
The meeting also paid tribute to Telugu poet Andesri, author of the state song “Jaya Jayahe Telangana.” The government decided to add his poems to school textbooks, build a memorial, and create a teaching position for his son.
The decision aims to keep local‑body funding flowing and to ensure that election rules meet court requirements, while also honoring a cultural icon of the state.
