Sampat Singh, a veteran Congress star in Haryana, has quit the Indian National Congress (INC). In a direct letter to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, the former cabinet minister slammed the party as a “private enterprise run by one family” and said internal democracy has collapsed.
He told Kharge that he no longer trusts the party to represent Haryana voters. The resignation was formally sent to central leaders and copies were given to Rahul Gandhi, K.C. Venugopal, B.K. Hariprasad and Haryana chief Rao Narendra.
Singh began his political career in the 1970s and joined the Congress in 2009 after serving as a cabinet minister and opposition leader. Although he won five consecutive elections from Fatehabad, the party denied him any ministerial or organisational role after the 2009 victory. He blamed internal factionalism and manipulation for sidelining him.
He claimed that being close to former minister Kumari Selja and the development projects in his constituency led to his isolation. According to Singh, the state leadership’s preference for dynastic politics and money power alienated stalwarts like Selja, Kiran Choudhry, Shruti Choudhry and Savitri Jindal.
Singh also criticised the 2020 Rajya Sabha nomination, saying a leader’s son was chosen over deserving candidates from Scheduled Castes and backward classes. He listed several well‑known Congress leaders who were “humiliated and forced to leave the party,” many of whom later joined the BJP and rose to high positions.
He highlighted Rahul Gandhi’s admission after the 2024 Assembly defeat, acknowledging that state leaders put personal interest above the party. However, Singh said no action followed, and the party ignored accountability, letting manipulation replace merit.
“The 2024 Assembly results show a case study in self‑destruction,” he wrote. “Arrogance and betrayal inside the party caused us to lose, even though pre‑poll expectations were strong.” He noted that the Dalit community, a key supporter in the Lok Sabha polls, pulled back after Kumari Selja was reportedly humiliated.
Sampat Singh said he remains committed to Haryana’s people, but he can’t stay in a system that has lost its moral and political compass. His resignation is “a painful but necessary decision,” he concluded.
