A deadly crash on National Highway 10 near Kalimpong, north Bengal, took the lives of four people and left three others wounded, police said Saturday.
The accident happened late on Friday night when a car traveling from Patharjhora in West Bengal to Gangtok in Sikkim plunged into a 50‑foot‑deep ditch in the Melli Kirani area, inside Kalimpong police jurisdiction.
The driver, Kamal Subba, 44, and passengers Sameera Subba (in her 20s), Januka Dorji and Neeta Gurung from Bojojhari were killed. The injured—Sunita Thapa, Sandriya Rai and Samiul Dorji—are receiving treatment at Melli Sikkim Hospital. The bodies have been sent for autopsy.
Locals blame a glare from headlights of a vehicle coming from the opposite direction as a possible cause, but police are still investigating. “The car fell into a ditch, killing four and injuring three,” a senior Kalimpong police officer told reporters.
The crash comes as north Bengal battles heavy rains. Recent downpours have worsened road conditions and triggered landslides across the region. The Bangladesh Meteorological Department issued a red alert for Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri, warning of over 200 mm of rain. Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Cooch Behar and North Dinajpur face orange alerts, while Malda and South Dinajpur are on yellow.
Officials urge drivers to exercise caution on wet, uneven roads and to stay alert for sudden changes in weather. The investigation into the Kalimpong ditch crash is ongoing.
