New Delhi, Dec 5 (LatestNewsX) – Delhi Police’s Crime Branch has finally taken into custody a suspect who had been on the run for almost five years after securing interim bail, the police announced on Friday.
The arrested individual, 42‑year‑old Animesh Jha, is accused of murdering his mother in 2017 in Dwarka. He was named a Proclaimed Offender by a Delhi court in October 2024.
According to the officials, Jha was located and apprehended at the Indo‑Nepal border in Uttar Pradesh’s Maharajganj district after persistent technical surveillance and intelligence‑led tracking over several months.
“The arrest was made from the Indo‑Nepal border area after months of continuous tracking, Intelligence collection, and advanced mobile‑based surveillance,” the police said in its press note.
A specialized team from the WR‑II/Crime Branch, led by Inspector Gautam Malik and under the supervision of ACP Rajpal Dabas, seized him late the night of December 3‑4 on Nautan Road near Sonauli.
Police explained that Jha, a B.Tech graduate who lives in Dwarka, fled to Nepal in 2020 after being granted interim bail during the COVID‑19 lockdown, and never returned to stand trial.
“He was granted interim bail in 2020 during the COVID‑19 pandemic but failed to join the trial thereafter and absconded to Nepal to evade the due process of law,” the police said.
Despite multiple summons, he never appeared for trial, leading to his designation as an absconder in FIR No. 58/2017 under Section 302 IPC at PS Dwarka North.
The incident dates back to February 28, 2017, when the police received a distress call from the deceased woman’s daughter, who reported that her mother had not answered calls for two to three days. She also suspected her brother, citing frequent quarrels between them. When officers reached the house, they discovered the woman murdered.
Investigations indicated that Jha allegedly killed his mother because he believed she intended to transfer her property to his sister. Police said he harboured resentment due to repeated disputes and alleged drug use, which strained family ties.
After securing interim bail, Jha crossed into Nepal to avoid judicial proceedings, prompting the Crime Branch to intensify its search efforts.
Officials said the breakthrough came through cutting‑edge mobile‑based technical analysis and ongoing monitoring of his suspected movements across the border region.
“The arrest of Animesh Jha marks a significant achievement for the Crime Branch in ensuring that absconding offenders are brought to justice and that fair and timely trial proceedings are upheld,” said DCP Harsh Indora.
