In Anantnag, Jammu and Kashmir, PDP president Mehbooba Mufti paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his birth anniversary Thursday. She highlighted how Gandhi once spotted hope in Kashmir, but today, the region faces a darker view shaped by criminal elements under the current government.
Talking to reporters, Mufti criticized the treatment of Kashmir residents, calling them anti-nationals. She pointed to the sealed home of the late Syed Ali Shah Geelani in the Valley, where his widow still lives. “We can disagree with Geelani’s ideology, just like we do with the RSS,” she said. As a former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister, Mufti noted the stark difference in how the central government handles protests. While it talks with demonstrators in Ladakh, it cracks down hard on those in the Kashmir Valley.
Mufti drew parallels to other conflicts, saying the violence in Ladakh is troubling and getting sorted through dialogue. “Even in Gaza, talks help resolve issues,” she added. “But here in Kashmir, people get branded as militants, and their properties get seized.”
Shifting focus to Ladakh, the local administration launched a magisterial inquiry into the deadly clashes on September 24 in Leh. Police action during the unrest killed four people, sparking outrage amid rising tensions in the region.
The probe aims to uncover what caused the violence, pinpoint those at fault, and review how law enforcement managed the situation. Officials promise a quick, time-bound investigation to hold people accountable and rebuild trust with the public.
The full report should arrive within four weeks. From October 4 to 18, anyone with details or evidence can share them directly with the inquiry officer to help speed things along.
