In Guwahati on Nov. 25, Assam Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi called on the state government to identify the “real mastermind” behind the Zubeen Garg case, saying that crucial details were being withheld from the public.
Speaking to reporters at Bishwanath Chariali, Gogoi highlighted the names that had surfaced in the Assam Assembly and challenged the identity of the supposed orchestrator.
He argued that the administration had not provided full transparency, a shortfall that was beginning to erode the confidence of rural voters in the justice system.
As he noted, “The government has spoken about certain individuals, but who is the mastermind behind this? That has not been made public. Instead of transparency, confusion is being created through different narratives,” Gogoi said.
Gogoi also accused Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of failing to honor a prior promise to make the Special Investigation Team (SIT) report public. According to Gogoi, the Chief Minister had assured an early release of the findings but has yet to comply, a lapse that has embarrassed the government even within its own ranks.
He warned that a larger plot aimed at influencing the upcoming Assam Assembly elections was unfolding, pointing to recent decisions and administrative moves that appear designed to keep the ruling party in power.
In response, the Congress has strengthened its Block Level Agents and booth‑level monitoring teams to ensure a fair electoral process.
Adding to his critique, Gogoi said, “In a bid to safeguard his chair, the Chief Minister is trying to bring voters from other states and include their names in Assam’s voter list. This is dangerous for the future of democracy in Assam,” urging citizens and parties alike to remain vigilant against any form of electoral manipulation.
Meanwhile, addressing party workers, former APCC president Ripun Bora slammed the ruling BJP for lackluster development over the last decade, while former state Congress chief Bhupen Bora invoked Assam’s cultural icons, insisting that unity and harmony must be protected at all costs.
Bhupen Bora declared that the people of Assam would not allow divisive forces to erode the state’s social and democratic fabric.
