New Delhi — The Indian government said it had no hand in the ban on Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav’s Facebook page. Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told reporters that Facebook acted on its own, following platform rules.
Later that day, Yadav’s account was unblocked and he could tweet again.
Yadav had complained that his posts about a journalist’s death and a woman’s suspicious death in Ballia were flagged as “Adult Sexual Exploitation or Violence.” He said the ban was unfair and that he was simply pointing out pressure on journalists from the BJP.
He used the incident to stress that his campaign relies on face‑to‑face outreach, not just social media. “The real fight happens on the ground,” he said.
The quick lift of the ban shows Facebook’s ability to reverse decisions, but the case highlights how political leaders and governments can be caught up in social‑media controversies.
