Bengaluru, September 4 — BJP youth leader and MP Tejasvi Surya has hit out at opposition parties and state governments for criticizing the Centre’s recent GST reforms. Speaking to the media after a press conference at the BJP office in Bengaluru, Surya asked politicians to stop showing hypocrisy over these changes.
Surya questioned why these state governments didn’t oppose the GST reforms during the official GST council meeting yesterday. He pointed out that all decisions were made unanimously in the meeting, meaning all states, including those criticizing now, agreed to the reforms. “You can’t oppose something behind closed doors and then change your stance in public for political gain,” Surya said. He called for consistency in political actions and principles instead of hypocrisy.
The BJP leader also pointed out that veteran Congress leader P. Chidambaram had opposed similar digital initiatives like Digital India and GST when they were first introduced. Surya said, “Opposing now just to oppose isn’t fair or respectful of the process.”
On another issue, Surya criticized the Karnataka government’s plans to buy private helicopters. He questioned how the same government claims it doesn’t have enough money to repair potholes in Bengaluru or support farmer children’s education, yet is considering spending big on luxury jets for top officials. He emphasized that the state lacks funds for essential services but seems ready to spend on luxury transportation.
Surya warned the media to keep a close watch on the helicopter tender process, suspecting it might turn into another scam similar to the Augusta Westland helicopter scandal. He urged transparency and accountability in the government’s purchases.
This sharp critique highlights the ongoing political debate over GST reforms and government spending priorities in Karnataka.
