Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath praised the new Goods and Services Tax (GST) reforms on Monday, describing them as a special festival gift to the nation. These changes kicked off right on the first day of Sharadiya Navratri, bringing relief to everyday consumers and boosting the Indian economy.
Speaking in Gorakhpur, Yogi highlighted how Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered this “gift” through major GST updates. Life-saving medicines now face zero GST, while other medicines drop to just 5%. Farmers get a break too, with GST reduced to 5% or fully removed on key items. And for students, stationery products are now GST-free at 0%. “This will speed up the economy and let people celebrate festivals with real enthusiasm,” Yogi said. He added that rising consumption will spark more production and create new jobs.
Yogi also shared how the government connected with consumers, businesses, and others through awareness drives. A popular slogan is catching on everywhere: “Ghati GST, Mila Uphaar, Dhanyawaad Modi Sarkaar” – meaning “Lower GST, Get Gifts, Thanks Modi Government.” Citizens are thanking PM Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman as they gear up for the festive season.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi echoed the excitement from Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh. He called the next-generation GST reforms a “double bonanza” for people during the festival time. “From today, these reforms are live, and the GST Bachat Utsav has begun,” Modi said at a public event.
At the same gathering, Modi launched and laid the foundation for development projects worth over Rs 5,100 crore. These include the 240 MW Heo Hydro Electric Project and the 186 MW Tato-I Hydro Electric Project in Arunachal’s Siyom sub-basin. He also kicked off a modern convention center in Tawang and various infrastructure initiatives totaling more than Rs 1,290 crore. These cover connectivity, health, fire safety, and hostels for working women, among other areas.
The GST overhaul came from the 56th GST Council meeting earlier this month. It simplifies the old four-slab system into a cleaner two-slab setup: 5% and 18%. Luxury and sin goods keep their 40% rate. Experts say this will make tax compliance easier, cut consumer prices, and give a lift to manufacturing. It supports sectors from agriculture and automobiles to fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) and renewable energy. Overall, the changes aim to lower living costs, empower small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), expand the tax base, and fuel inclusive growth across India.
