Radhakrishnan elected Vice President; Opposition’s unity claims questioned

Opposition’s Unity Claim Takes a Hit in Vice Presidential Election

The recent Vice Presidential election in India has sparked big questions about the Opposition’s so-called unity. NDA candidate C.P. Radhakrishnan won comfortably, but the vote numbers don’t quite match up with what Opposition leaders like Congress’s Jairam Ramesh promised. This cross-voting drama could spell trouble for the INDIA bloc as they prepare for upcoming state elections.

Radhakrishnan grabbed 452 first-preference votes, easily beating the 391 needed to win, according to Rajya Sabha Secretary General P.C. Mody. His rival, Justice (Retd.) B. Sudershan Reddy—the joint pick of the INDIA bloc—got just 300 votes. No big surprise there, but the real story lies in the gap.

Jairam Ramesh, Congress’s senior leader and communications in-charge, hyped up the Opposition’s effort on X (formerly Twitter). He claimed all 315 Opposition MPs showed up to vote, calling it an "unprecedented 100% turnout" and a huge show of unity. Ramesh even boasted that Reddy snagged 40% of the votes, up from 26% in 2022, and labeled the NDA’s win a "moral and political defeat" for the BJP.

But hold on—the numbers don’t add up. If every one of those 315 MPs voted as Ramesh said, why did Reddy only get 300? That leaves 15 votes unaccounted for. Did 15 Opposition MPs secretly cross-vote for the NDA’s Radhakrishnan? This cross-voting puzzle points to cracks in the INDIA bloc’s front, even as leaders try to project strength.

This isn’t just a minor slip-up. With assembly elections on the horizon and seat-sharing talks heating up for 2024 and 2026, the INDIA bloc faces a tough road ahead. Internal trust issues could lead to investigations into those 15 MPs, and who knows— it might even turn into a full-blown scandal.

While the NDA basks in its clear victory, the Opposition’s push for a "moral win" looks shaky thanks to these voting discrepancies. The INDIA bloc now has to deal with the fallout from cross-voting allegations and rebuild unity before it’s too late. Stay tuned as this political twist unfolds in Indian politics.
