Women around the world are making big strides in education, sports, and business, and the rise of women entrepreneurs is inspiring everywhere. In Gujarat, India, one standout story comes from Shilpa Malik, the driving force behind the startup BioScan Research. Her company is revolutionizing healthcare by developing medical devices that catch life-threatening diseases early, potentially saving thousands of lives.
Shilpa, a tech-savvy entrepreneur from Gujarat, has turned her passion into a success story. She co-founded BioScan Research Private Limited in September 2017 in Ahmedabad with Anupam Lavania, and she serves as the Chief Technology Officer. With more than 10 years in hardware innovation, including time as a scientist at India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) where she worked on military sensor systems, Shilpa knows how to build cutting-edge tech.
At BioScan Research, the team focuses on non-invasive tools for early diagnosis of serious conditions like traumatic brain injury and intracranial hemorrhage. They blend optics, electronics, mechanics, and software to create portable devices that doctors can use right on-site. This quick detection means faster treatment and better outcomes for patients.
The startup’s journey started close to home. Shilpa shared in a recent release how a family member’s traumatic brain injury sparked the idea. “The real problem wasn’t the injury—it was the delay in detecting it,” she said. “Many people face worse issues because diagnosis takes too long. We used our tech skills to start BioScan Research and get support from i-Create, a Gujarat government body that backs tech startups. After four to five years of research, we launched in 2017.”
BioScan has earned strong backing from key players. The Gujarat government’s i-Create provided initial funding, and the company has also received help from IIT Kanpur, the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), the Department of Health Research (DHR), and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). With that support, they patented their brain injury device and spent three years on clinical trials. Tests involved 1,500 patients and over 11,000 brain scans at top hospitals like NIMHANS in Bangalore and AIIMS in Bhopal, working with leading neurosurgeons. The device proved its worth and hit the market for commercial use.
So far, BioScan has sold about 70 units across India, mostly to government primary health centers, community health centers, and trauma units. Doctors love it for its 95% accuracy and 97% sensitivity, building real trust in the product. The startup has racked up more than 50 awards, including the 2024 Best Extramural Research Award from ICMR and a win in the India-Israel Innovation Challenge.
This success ties into broader efforts for women empowerment in Gujarat. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his time as Chief Minister, launched key programs like Mission Mangalam Yojana, the Women Special Economic Zone, the Special Women Industrial Park, and the Women Economic Development Corporation to boost women entrepreneurs. Current Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel keeps that momentum going, helping women-led businesses thrive.
Stories like Shilpa Malik’s and BioScan Research show how women entrepreneurs in India are leading the charge in innovation, especially in medical devices and healthcare tech. Their work not only advances women economic empowerment but also makes a real difference in saving lives.
