In New Delhi on Sunday, India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar spoke at the 4th Kautilya Economic Conclave about how the U.S.–China rivalry is reshaping world politics. He warned that competition between the two giants is pushing governments worldwide to act more aggressively and to put less faith in old alliances.
Jaishankar said the United States is now “more assertive” and uses its national interests to steer partnerships. “We see the U.S. pushing its agenda not just for itself but through its allies,” he explained. “China, on the other hand, is in a period of transition. It has ambitious ideas about new institutions, but those structures aren’t fully in place yet.”
He added that the old balance of power among the U.S., Russia, China, and Europe has shifted. “What used to be a sweet spot has turned into a challenge for every side,” Jaishankar noted. “Europe, for example, no longer enjoys the same clear-cut advantages it had in security and energy.”
Energy was another focus. The minister highlighted the U.S.’s move from being an energy‑dependent country to becoming a major exporter. “The U.S. is now a key player in fossil fuel markets,” he said. “At the same time, China has become a leader in renewable energy. In any energy scenario, both countries have a stake.”
Jaishankar warned that the intensity of competition makes governments more willing to use any tool they have, including weapons of influence. “We see a trend toward weaponising almost everything,” he cautioned. “That risk prompts many leaders to back away from danger, even as they push their agendas.”
He described the global environment as “paradoxical.” On one hand, the sheer number of challenges encourages risk‑taking. On the other, those same challenges force countries to tighten safety nets. “It’s like raising the trapeze and pulling the safety net out,” he said, illuminating the complex dance of modern geopolitics.
At its core, Jaishankar’s talk emphasizes that the U.S.–China rivalry is not just a U.S. or Chinese story—it is a global story that shapes India’s foreign policy, Europe’s security, and the world’s energy markets. The conclave’s message: in a world where power shifts faster than ever, staying alert and adaptable is more important than ever.
