Gujarat marks International Anti-Corruption Day with CM Patel’s call for collective vigilance

Gandhinagar – On 9 December the state marked International Anti‑Corruption Day under the banner “Vigilance is Our Shared Responsibility.” Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel chaired the ceremony, which was also graced by Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi.

The Anti‑Corruption Bureau (ACB) hosted the event, highlighting police officers who had shown exceptional performance in corruption cases and four brave citizens whose complaints helped expose and bring corrupt officials to justice. Twelve students who excelled in state‑level essay and speech contests on anti‑corruption were also honoured.

In his address, CM Patel described the ACB as a pillar that protects the poor and delivers justice. He stressed the importance of ethical behaviour: “One must never take beyond what is rightfully theirs – this is the value our culture has handed down to us. When our work brings inner satisfaction, that is true duty. ACB’s image must be such that wrongdoers live in constant fear of being caught, so corruption never takes root.” He called for a “zero tolerance” stance, urging the bureau to maintain strict vigilance to create a corruption‑free Gujarat and boost the state’s development.

Deputy CM Sanghavi praised the ACB’s resolve in tackling misconduct at all levels, pointing out that the state has implemented tough measures, including mandatory early retirements, to reinforce the CM’s firm approach. He noted that over the past three years 34 Class‑I and 98 Class‑II officials were booked, and this year alone 194 cases were recorded, leading to 277 arrests. He also highlighted the potential of technology—especially AI tools—to streamline complaint processing and strengthen investigations.

Chief Secretary M.K. Das warned that corruption is a global obstacle that hampers development and disproportionately harms the poor. He reviewed reforms introduced under CM Patel’s leadership, such as simplifying rules, major administrative reforms, easing business procedures, and revising revenue laws.

ACB Director Piyush Patel outlined the outreach initiatives undertaken in the last two months. These included school essay and speech competitions, integrity pledge ceremonies at government offices, street plays, marathons, public engagement events, and widespread distribution of information about the ACB’s 1064 helpline.

The gathering saw attendance from senior officials, ACB officers, students, and citizens who have stood up bravely against corruption.
