Gujarat Police deploy AI surveillance for pilgrim safety at Ambaji temple during annual fair

During the busy Bhadarvi Punam festival, thousands of devotees visit the famous Ambaji temple in Gujarat’s Banaskantha district. To keep everyone safe and manage the crowds effectively, local police are now using cutting-edge technology — artificial intelligence (AI).

For the first time at Ambaji, police are deploying AI-powered security cameras to monitor the area in real-time. These smart cameras help track suspicious activity, find missing people, identify known offenders, and keep a close watch on crowd density. This new system aims to improve safety for the millions of pilgrims visiting the temple during the festival.

A dedicated control room has been set up where police monitor live feeds from hundreds of CCTV cameras equipped with AI. This setup enables police to respond quickly to any untoward incidents, ensuring a smooth and secure experience for visitors.

Banaskantha Superintendent of Police, Prashant Sumbe, explained that the new digital system makes security stronger. “The AI cameras can match faces with criminal records and alert us immediately if someone dangerous is spotted,” he said. The system also helps measure how many people are inside the temple area, helping officials control the crowds better.

Parking problems are being handled efficiently thanks to the “Show My Parking” app, making it easier for visitors to find parking space. Police have also deployed various modern tools, including cameras that count people, solar-powered AI cameras, body-worn cameras for officers, vehicle-mounted cameras, and a crowd management system with microphones.

All these feeds are watched continuously at the police control room. This high-tech setup ensures quick action and keeps the safety of pilgrims as the top priority. “Using advanced technology makes our security measures even stronger,” added SP Sumbe.

Ambaji is not just a popular tourist destination—it’s a deeply spiritual and cultural hub. Known as one of India’s most revered Shakti Peeths, the temple dedicated to Goddess Amba attracts devotees from across Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and beyond. Historically, the temple has been a symbol of faith and resistance, often drawing political and social attention.

The pilgrimage boosts local economies through tourism and trade, creating jobs and business opportunities. Politically, the large gatherings at Ambaji highlight the important link between faith and governance, making the temple a key place for cultural identity and community unity in Gujarat.
