Gujarat: Police rescue 6-month-old kidnapped near Kalol

On Diwali day in Gujarat, a six‑month‑old baby named Shahrukh was snatched from a village near Chhatral Road, but Gandhinagar police recovered him within hours.

The incident happened outside Panot village, close to Chhatral Bridge in Kalol, Gandhinagar district. Around 2:30 p.m. on October 20, Kala Mir and her family were eating at a lassi stall when she stepped away to buy balm. In that brief moment, a woman in a green saree walked past the bridge with the infant.

When Kala Mir returned, Shahrukh was missing. She immediately called the police, and teams from the Kalol Taluka Police, Local Crime Branch (LCB), Special Operations Group (SOG) and cyber‑surveillance units sprang into action.

CCTV footage and local tips led investigators to a 40‑year‑old woman named Madhi Nayak, who had lived in Galaxy Society, Chhatral. After an 18‑hour search that combined technical surveillance and informant reports, police found and arrested Madhi Nayak in Meda‑Adaraj village.

The baby was unharmed when he was handed back to his grateful parents. During questioning, the accused confessed she had taken Shahrukh because she longed for her own child.

The case underlines the rising problem of child abductions in Gujarat. In 2023, the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) recorded 734 abductions, including children and adults. Ahmedabad alone reported 296 cases, up sharply from 182 in 2021. Most victims were girls aged 12‑16, often targeted for forced marriage, trafficking or sexual exploitation.

The quick resolution by Gandhinagar police has been praised by the community, highlighting the importance of swift local law‑enforcement response in preventing child kidnapping.
