Unsoo Kim, Managing Director of Hyundai Motor India Limited, shared his excitement about the government’s decision. “We sincerely appreciate this progressive step by the Government of India to reduce GST on passenger vehicles,” he said. Kim called it a major boost for the auto industry, making personal mobility more affordable for millions of Indians. So, what’s behind these changes? The 56th GST Council meeting introduced what many are calling GST 2.0 for the auto sector. Small cars—those under four meters with petrol engines up to 1,200cc or diesel up to 1,500cc—now face just 18% GST, down from 28%. Larger vehicles with bigger engines will have 40% GST, but without the extra cess from before. Hyundai believes these GST reforms on passenger vehicles will lower ownership costs, spark demand, and lift customer spirits.
