Hardeep Puri slams opposition over ‘vote chori’ claims, calls it baseless hysteria

Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri fired back at opposition parties on Wednesday, slamming their claims of electoral malpractice as baseless attacks on India’s strong democracy. In a fiery post on X, Puri accused these politicians of spreading “hysteria” over voter lists just to tarnish the country’s electoral system.

He pointed out how opposition leaders flip-flop on issues like paper ballots. “One day they’re pushing for paper ballots, but when they lose under that system, they can’t explain why nearly 35 of their MPs still voted for the NDA candidate in the vice-president election,” Puri said. He called this “shoot-and-scoot politics,” where they make wild allegations without any proof.

Puri added that these claims always fall apart under scrutiny because they’re built on fake data and no facts. Instead of taking real action, like filing complaints with the Election Commission of India (ECI), the opposition just blames losses on “imaginary” vote theft, he charged.

To back his point, Puri highlighted misleading opposition claims about voter additions in Maharashtra. “More voters were added in 2004 and 2009 when the UPA won big than in 2024,” he noted. He also called out irregularities in opposition strongholds, like 93,499 doubtful voters in Wayanad, 200,089 in Rae Bareli, and 71,977 with fake addresses.

At the heart of it, Puri said, this is all about vote bank politics. The opposition wants to “empower infiltrators, steal the real mandate of Indian voters, and even risk national security,” he alleged. As debates heat up ahead of elections, Puri’s sharp words underscore the ongoing tussle over electoral integrity in India.
