‘He is daydreaming’: DKS dismisses Kumaraswamy’s claim of ‘explosive political developments’ in K’taka

Bengaluru — In a statement Saturday, Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister and Congress state president D.K. Shivakumar rebuked Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H.D. Kumaraswamy for saying that the state was on the brink of “explosive political developments.” Shivakumar said the claim was groundless.

When reporters asked him about Kumaraswamy’s suggestion that the Congress‑led government might soon fall, Shivakumar dismissed the leader of the JD‑S as merely “daydreaming” and declined to offer further details.

Asked whether Congress will contest the Chairmanship of the Legislative Council, Shivakumar noted that the party already has a strong presence there. “Of course we have the numbers. We have information that our strength is higher in the Council. We will explain the situation; they do not have sufficient numbers,” he added. “There is a demand from our party MLCs. They have met me and expressed that they want a Congress member to hold the posts of Council Chairman and Deputy Chairman. We will take a decision by the next Assembly session,” he said.

Today, senior BJP leader Basavaraj Horatti holds the Chairman position in the Legislative Council.

Kumaraswamy’s remarks arrived amid growing speculation about cracks within the ruling Congress. Earlier at the party’s Silver Jubilee in Bengaluru, the Union Minister hinted that unforeseen shifts could soon shake Karnataka’s political scene. He said the situation had reached a point where “no one can predict who will take what stance” and warned of a “political upheaval within a few months.”

The minister also urged cadres to stay in touch with voters, arguing that people were upset over what he described as poor governance, rising taxes and inflation. “Give our party a chance. I will prove what good governance truly is and what we can do for the people in just five years. If I fail to provide a government that wins the people’s approval, I will never seek your support again,” he cautioned.

Additionally, Kumaraswamy criticised the state’s finances, claiming Karnataka’s debt had surpassed Rs 7.50 lakh crore. He accused Chief Minister Siddaramaiah of borrowing between Rs 5 to Rs 5.50 lakh crore during his term and demanded clarity on the use of those funds.
