Congress Slams PM Modi’s Visit to Bhupen Hazarika Centenary in Guwahati, Calls It Election Ploy
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to head to Guwahati this Saturday evening for the grand centenary celebrations of legendary singer Bhupen Hazarika, a Bharat Ratna awardee. But the Congress party isn’t buying the goodwill gesture—they’re hitting back hard, saying the PM should truly understand Hazarika’s soulful songs before showing up.
The event kicks off around 5 PM, where PM Modi will speak to the crowd honoring the icon known for his heartfelt folk music that captured India’s spirit. Hazarika, who passed away in 2011, remains a huge favorite in Assam and beyond for tunes like "Ganga" that blend culture, nature, and social messages.
Congress leader Pawan Khera didn’t hold back in his reaction. Talking to , he said, "If PM Modi really gets even one of Bhupen Hazarika’s songs, he’ll truly understand India. He’s not just a chief guest hopping from event to event—the real wisdom of our nation echoes in Hazarika’s music. Just take ‘Ganga’—if he listens to every word, he’ll feel the heartbeat of this country."
Adding fuel to the fire, another Congress voice, Udit Raj, called out the visit as a smart political move ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections. "Bhupen Hazarika has a massive fanbase, no doubt," Raj told . "So when PM Modi joins the birth centenary bash, it’ll sway those fans. And swaying fans means building a vote bank—that’s the real game plan."
He went on, "PM Modi starts touring key spots way before polls. A year or even 18 months in advance, wherever elections loom, he shows up. It’s all about that vote bank, and Hazarika’s celebrations are just the perfect cover."
But it’s not all politics—PM Modi’s Assam trip packs in big development wins too. On Sunday, he’ll roll out major infrastructure and industrial projects worth over Rs 18,530 crore, boosting the state’s growth.
Starting at 11 AM, he’ll lay the foundation stone for several initiatives in Darrang district and chat with locals at a public meet. Then, around 1:45 PM in Golaghat, he’ll inaugurate the Assam Bio-ethanol Private Limited and the Numaligarh Refinery Plant, plus kick off a new Polypropylene Plant. These moves promise jobs, energy boosts, and industrial push for Assam.
As the debate heats up, eyes are on how PM Modi’s words at the Hazarika event will land—will they honor the legend or spark more political buzz? Stay tuned for updates on this Assam showdown.
