Chennai, Nov 9 – The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that heavy rain will hit southern Tamil Nadu over the next 24 hours. The alert covers Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli and Tenkasi, where the northeast monsoon is expected to tighten and bring widespread showers.
The night before the alert, many towns already felt the impact. In Kanyakumari district, Nagarkovil and nearby Boothapandi, Suchindram and Sunganthakai saw heavy downpours that doused the soil and cut the heat. Residents spoke of water‑logging in low‑lying areas, but relief from the high humidity helped many people feel cooler.
Madurai also experienced moderate to heavy rains, especially in Thirupparankundram, Thirumangalam, Vadakarai, Chengulam, Karisalpatti and Rayapalayam. Streets slipped, and visibility fell during the late‑night showers, but farmers said the rain will aid standing crops.
In Karur, a steady drizzle rolled through the night. Motorists and pedestrians braved wet roads, while mild showers in Coimbatore’s western suburbs – Perur, Pachapalayam, Thithipalayam, Kalampalayam and Madampatti – offered a welcome break after dry weeks. Local residents noted that the rain helped refill open wells and recharge groundwater.
IMD officials say the heavy rainfall will continue in the hilly belts of Tirunelveli and Tenkasi and keep pouring over Kanyakumari thanks to a low‑pressure trough over the southern peninsula. Southern and delta districts such as Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Thanjavur and Nagapattinam are tipped for even more intense showers on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Chennai may see light to moderate rain, cloudy skies and gusty winds, but no strong storms are expected. Authorities advise people in the southern districts to watch for possible water‑logging and minor landslides as the monsoon strengthens.
