Heavy rain forecast in western, northern TN; fishermen advised to stay ashore

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that Tamil Nadu will see heavy showers and thunderstorms by Thursday. Two low‑pressure systems – one over the southern peninsula and a second over the Kanyakumari Sea – are boosting moisture and wind convergence, sparking heavy rain across the state.

Districts in the rain hot‑spot

The bulletins list several districts where ghat and high‑altitude areas will get the heaviest downpours:

  • Coimbatore (especially hilly parts)
  • Nilgiris
  • Erode, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tirupattur, Vellore, Ranipet
  • Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur

Tell residents in these zones to keep puddles in check, secure loose items, and be ready for flash floods.

Chennai and suburbs

In Chennai, clouds will blanket the city most of the day. Light to moderate rain, sometimes with thunder and lightning, is expected. Temperatures will stay in the 34–35 °C range, while lows stay near 26–27 °C. Residents can plan indoor activities and stay hydrated.

A warning for fishermen

The IMD has issued a clear warning to all fishermen: stay off the water because gusty winds set to hit the southern coast. Wind speeds are forecast from 35–45 km/h, with occasional peaks up to 55 km/h. This comes along the Gulf of Mannar, parts of the Kanyakumari Sea, east‑central and west‑central Arabian Sea, as well as the Karnataka‑Kerala coast and near the Lakshadweep islands.

Fishermen already at sea are urged to return to the nearest harbor immediately. Local authorities have been asked to stay alert, especially in coastal patches prone to landslides or flash floods.

Rainfall outlook

IMD teams expect rain intensity to ease after Thursday, but isolated heavy showers could keep brewing in the Nilgiris and Western Ghats for the next 24 hours. Keep an eye on local weather updates and stay safe.
