Heavy rain likely in 16 TN districts, IMD warns of intense showers till Oct 19

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Chennai has warned that Tamil Nadu will see heavy rain next week. Sixteen districts are expected to receive strong showers on Tuesday, and the storm could keep coming until October 19, especially across the Western Ghats and the interior hills.

Key heavy‑rain zones include the hilly districts of Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Theni and Tenkasi. The hill belts of Tiruppur, Erode, Dharmapuri, Salem, Namakkal, Karur, Dindigul, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Tiruchirappalli, Kallakurichi and Tiruvannamalai should also prepare for heavy downpours. On October 15 and 16, rain is expected in the hills of Tirunelveli and the coastal districts of Kanniyakumari, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram and Sivaganga. A few isolated heavy showers may hit Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, and Mayiladuthurai.

The RMC cited a low‑pressure system over the southwest Bay of Bengal and easterly winds as the main drivers. Chennai itself may get moderate rain for the next two days, plus thunder and lightning in parts of the city.

Tamil Nadu has already suffered multiple flash floods in Coimbatore and Tiruppur earlier this month, damaging roads and halting traffic. Salem and Erode districts are keeping reservoir levels low and have released water from minor dams to prevent flooding. The Nilgiris administration remains alert after several landslides near Coonoor and Kotagiri last week, which closed some roads. Residents in hilly or low‑lying areas are urged to stay vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel. Farmers are told to secure harvested crops and reinforce bunds around paddy fields.

The state government has asked district collectors to run 24‑hour monitoring and keep relief teams ready as the storm rolls in. Stay tuned for updates from the RMC and watch local news for more on safety measures as heavy rain continues across Tamil Nadu.
