Kerala is bracing for more heavy rain as the state’s weather office ramps up its alerts. On Thursday, the Kerala Meteorological Department issued an orange alert for Idukki and Pathanamthitta districts due to ongoing downpours. Yellow alerts stay in place for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kottayam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, and Palakkad.
Expect the rains to keep falling over the next few days, with isolated heavy showers hitting several spots. In orange alert areas, folks should stay extra vigilant, especially in spots at risk for landslides or flooding.
Meteorologists warn that strong winds could gust up to 30-40 km/h alongside the rain. They predict totals of 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm in just 24 hours, which might cause local flooding and waterlogging in low-lying neighborhoods.
A low-pressure system over the northern Bay of Bengal is behind much of this wet weather, but it’s set to weaken in the next 12 hours. Still, widespread rain should stick around as the southwest monsoon winds down. Watch for intense bursts that could disrupt daily life in affected districts.
Authorities have a clear message for fishermen: Stay ashore. They banned fishing along the Kerala, Karnataka, and Lakshadweep coasts from September 25 to 27 because of rough seas and those powerful winds.
To stay safe, keep checking official weather updates, skip unnecessary travel in risky zones, and follow local guidelines. Coastal areas, hills, and flood-prone spots need the most attention right now to avoid trouble during this rainy spell.
