A landslide on a private bus hit the remote streets of Bilaspur in Himachal Pradesh, killing 16 people and shaking a local Army family. The accident happened in the evening of October 7 as the vehicle was traveling the Marotan‑Ghumarwin route near Jhandutta tehsil. Heavy rains the week before had loosened the hillside, and the sudden fall of rocks sent the bus tumbling.
Eight of the dead were in one family. Vipin Kumar, a soldier, lost his wife Anjana, their 7‑year‑old son Naksh, and 4‑year‑old Aarav. His brother Rajkumar also died, along with Rajkumar’s wife Kamlesh. The four were celebrating a family gathering at Kainchi Mod when the bus slid off the road. The tragedy left a small village in shock.
Rescues were delayed by rain and further sliding debris, but teams from the local police, Home Guard, and the State Disaster Response Force started searching at 6:40 am. Two children who survived the crash received treatment at AIIMS Bilaspur and were discharged early this morning. The search team found the body of a missing child on Wednesday, bringing the death toll up to 16.
The victims included 11 men, four women, and one child. Victims’ families were identified and notified immediately. The police chief, Sandeep Dhawal, said local residents were crucial, pulling two children to safety before emergency teams arrived.
Families receive 25,000 rupees in immediate relief, and further support will come under the State Disaster Relief Fund. The accident has spurred calls for better road safety and stronger warnings before heavy monsoon rains hit the hills.
